IRTACTICAL WEAPONS CLASSIFIED AS NON-FIREARMS BY ATF
Whitewater, WI, April 12, 2012 – The growth of irTactical continues as the irM4 rifle and subsequent weapons have been given official status as NON-FIREARMS by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). This classification was granted in December 2011 by the ATF’s Firearms Technology Branch (FTB). They found that the irM4 rifle is not a firearm because it “cannot be designed to or readily converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive.” Further examination determines that the construction of the irM4 does not contain the receiver of any actual firearm and no actual parts that could make such a conversion, or be adapted to.
This classification achieves several important functions for irTactical. It will allow easy transportation and use of the system throughout the United States. It also allows exportation of the gear to other countries with fewer setbacks, especially when paired with the NON-ITAR classification granted by the State Department. This means the irTactical system has an advantage over other competing systems that use actual firearms with modifications or add-ons to simulate training.
“We designed this system in a very specific way that would allow us to sell the most products possible. We want to help save lives and allowing most law enforcement around the world to use our system with ease is a step towards that goal,” noted Rick Jensen, creator and president of irTactical.
The irTactical system consists of three main parts: the irM4, irVest, and Smartmag. The irM4 mimics a real AR15/M16/M4 rifle in form, fit, and function (aside from being a firearm). The irVest is a standard MOLLE vest that houses electronics for receiving shots from the irM4. The Smartmag powers the irM4 and keeps track of ammunition count. The irM4 rifle is the main component falling under the NON-FIREARM classification.
